Young Girl Lights Her First Shabbat Candle

In this sweet seven-minute home video a young girl receives a silver Shabbat candlestick in a package in the mail from her grandparents just prior to her third birthday. According to the Hasidic sect of Chabad Lubavitch, girls should light Shabbat candles from the age of three. Due to the perceived spiritual power of this particular commandment, the movement even runs a global campaign encouraging Jewish women and girls to light Shabbat candles, regardless of their level of observance. This video was produced by 12-year-old Mendel Kramer for Chabad of Merrick-Bellmore-Wantaugh, one of a large chain of centers that reaches out to bring Jews closer to Judaism.
