Often printed as the first of the Friday night repertoire of table songs (zemirot), this composition of unknown origin praises the “rest, joy, and light” that Shabbat heralds for the Jews. “Those who keep and remember it will attest that in six days all creation was completed.” This widely-known musical setting (accompanied on-screen by transliteration and a Portuguese translation) captures the joyous feel and restful pace of Shabbat. The text, with English translation and transliteration, can be seen here. The usual substitution for God's name in sacred texts, "Adonai," has been replaced by "Hashem" ["the Name"] in this recording.
